Give a Coffee, Get a Coffee.

You may not know Jonathan Stark but he is letting you use his Starbucks card to buy yourself a free cup of coffee. Stark posted his personal Starbucks card online, for anyone to use with some surprising results.

Taking his cue from the “take a penny, leave a penny” trays at convenience stores, Stark decided to test an experiment in anonymous collective sharing using digital currency on mobile phones. Giving coffee is actually a wonderful old italian custom called Caffe Pagato, which translates to English as ‘Coffee Paid’. Using mobile technology, the “Pay it Forward” mentality is taken to a new level and just makes you feel good—maybe even better than an iced carmel macchiato does (well almost!).

Recently, Stark said that about $3,664.24 had passed through the card. “That’s all in the last two days,” he cautions. But what is most inspiring is the split between donors and diners. At least 179 people have put money on the card, shelling out for 326 coffee drinkers.  Although I just peeked at the balance and it is currently zero just waiting for the next anonymous giver. Coffee anyone?
