A recent spot for Mercedes Benz has me of two minds. While I am glad to hear that Google VP of Engineering, Vic Gundotra, is alive and well, and while I am impressed with the technical skill of the engineers at Mercedes, I can’t help but wonder: who are these idiots?
Obviously, Mr. Gundotra is a highly intelligent man. But in this :30 spot, he rather unashamedly states “I never saw the traffic stop…it was clearly too late for me to do anything”. Really? Then please sir, do us all a favor and a hire the professional driver that you can no doubt easily afford. Many of us may “turn just for a brief moment” while we are driving. But I for one would like to think that in perfect weather, in broad daylight, we would be paying enough attention to know that the lane that we were traveling in had “come to a complete stop”.
My fear is that, as is so often the case, engineering that first appears in luxury cars will eventually make its way into more affordable vehicles. In a world where people are already inexplicably texting while they drive, do we really need drivers who wait for their car to do the braking for them? Does anyone else watch this ad and fear for their life?
