Anyone who regularly shops in Costco knows that “Holiday” shopping starts earlier and earlier every year. Halloween candy in August and Christmas trees in October are the norm, and seem to show up earlier and earlier every year. But I wonder, is that what people really want, or is it a way for the retailer to stand out?
Seems everyone is trying to one (open) up the next during this time of year, as many retailers have announced plans this year to copy Walmart’s midnight opening on Thanksgiving last year . What ever happened to the fun of Black Friday, waking up at 3:00 A.M. to race down to the local Toys ‘R Us to get one of the 10 Tickle Me Elmos or Furby ? Now all you have to do is finish your turkey, pumpkin pie and coffee, and head on out to the local Target.
And they just keep pushing the limits… One megamall chain, Tanger Outlets, is now opening at 10:00 P.M. on Thanksgiving night for their Moonlight Madness sales !
Again, is this what people really want to be doing after their family gatherings of watching football and saying thanks over stuffing and cranberry sauce? Somehow, I doubt it. It may be sport for some, but sadly for others it’s probably a “must do” in order to get the best deals.
But the proof will be in the pudding, when the chains report their Holiday sales figures. Or the real savvy shoppers are just waiting for Cyber Monday , when they can lounge at their laptop and shop till they drop.
