A Greener “Groupon”.

With the explosive growth of Groupon, LivingSocial, Yipit, Foursquare over the last few years, it was only a matter of time before incentivized charity sites jumped on the bandwagon of offering consumers discounts on local merchants’ products and services.

Newly launched “The Mutual,” a Brooklyn-based, socially-minded, for-profit  aligns the self interests of businesses and consumers with environmental action. According to themutual.com, The Mutual was created to make it easy and advantageous for consumers to be green.

For most people, the desire and intent to protect our planet exists; and while most people around the world say they want to be more green, very few act.  Like most daily discount sites, The Mutual provides do-gooders with access to special deals and discounts at local shops and eateries in exchange for a $10 monthly membership fee. The company then donates 80 percent of the monthly fee to a charity, which includes organizations like The Carbon Fund, Oceana, World Resources Institute, The Trust for Public Land and Center for Ecoliteracy.

Will this ‘Groupon for Good’ be a success? Only time will tell. Still in its infancy, The Mutual has a handful of members and has donated approximately $2000 dollars. It will be interesting to see if this trend catches on.
