The Value of Shock Value

As the awareness of the dangers of distracted driving continues to increase, I believe we’ve all seen the varied array of shocking commercials and videos showing an accident about to happen or often an accident’s deadly outcome.

If the seriousness of the subject matter were even slightly less important, most of us would probably agree that many of these ads are overusing the shock value technique. But since saving lives is the primary goal, I think we’re all more accepting of them regardless of their strategic parity.

But this one by VW gives the viewer absolutely no advance notice of what’s about to happen. Why,  it’s just an ordinary Internet tutorial for applying makeup, right?…
