“We want listeners tomorrow, go make babies today,” screams one ad. Another reads, “Do it for Chicago.” The station is calling it their “2032 Membership Drive” and it has its own Facebook page at: http://apps.facebook.com/gomakebabies/
The campaign encourages listeners in their 20s and 30s to “make babies” so that in 20 years the station will have more (much needed) younger listeners. The logic being that if teenagers were born into a public radio-loving family, they might be persuaded to keep listening, even through their teenage years.
Are they serious? No, of course not. But, they need to create some listenership among the 25-and-under Chicagoans who are not aware of NPR and WBEZ. They’re smart enough to realize an ad from James Taylor isn’t going to cut it, and maybe, just maybe, they need to do something outrageous that people will talk about. So far, mission accomplished.
