Keep Your Eye On The Prize

Broncos Yard Sign NewsIn the chrome-and-glass world of “contemporary” marketing,  the pressure is always on to find the “shiny new object.” Often, this quest trumps all judgment as to what is truly relevant and motivating to REAL PEOPLE. So how about taking a lesson from those people… starting with @DenverBroncos Fever in Denver, CO!

Until this weekend, NFL playoff mania was at fever pitch in Denver, and once again, a local TV station and grocer did a giveaway to support the Broncos. This year, the giveaway was a “United in Orange yard sign. Yup. Yard sign. Last year, it was a window cling.  Shiny new objects? – like, not at all.

Yet a quick look at the front yards around the neighborhoods, and watching the lines form at King Soopers grocery stores where the giveaways took place, tell me that these cheesy, old-school yard signs were a HUGE hit. Reality Check: What is always going to win is giving the people what they really want and not letting shiny-new-object-lust cloud everything. Too bad we couldn’t say the same for The Broncos. May not be heading to the Super Bowl, but “United in Orange” was a winner for them nonetheless!

Thanks so much for bringing this to my attention. It’s very challenging to resist BSOS (Bright Shiny Object Syndrome) for all of us in marketing. Bravo for always noticing what’s extraordinary and sharing it with us!
